MIXTAPE

JERKCURB

The Hook mixtape is compiled through a series of music related questions. Each artist who fills it out can answer as many or as few of the questions as they wish, and elaborate on their choices, or let them speak for themselves.

Artist

Jacob Read (aka Jerkcurb)

Location

London

FYI

As well as being the musical (and visual) mastermind behind Jerkcurb, Read is the frontman of the 'intoxicatingly odd' Horsey.

Press Clippings

'To describe the music he creates is to risk leaning on the drudgery of buzzwords: nocturnal, dreamy, brooding. Densely layered, reverb-laden guitar competes with complex vocal harmonies and sparse drums to create a sound that brings to mind both an artist like 60s cult figure Pete Drake and the weirdest parts of Tom Waits.' - Vice

The last piece of music you paid for (streaming doesn’t count)

Paddy McAloon’s ‘I Trawl The Megahertz’, vinyl reissue. Beautiful & strange album of neo classical existentialism.

Your favourite place to listen to music

Walking through the streets at night or when I'm about to go to sleep. The darkness draws attention to the detail.

A song which reminds you of your childhood

That song by Deep Forest with the tribal singing. Borrowed my dads cd & would crawl under my bath when the water was hot & listen on headphones.

Your go-to karaoke song

Now Or Never by Elvis, anything by Roy Orbison. If i’ve waited in the queue for a song in a karaoke bar, i may as well butcher one of the masters.

A song which could change the world if everyone heard it

I don’t think any one song could collectively change anything. Music is beautiful because it is subjective & means something different to everyone.

A song you'd rather never hear again
When I worked in a post office they always played Capital FM. So anything in the charts circa 2012.

A song which reminds you of someone you don’t see anymore

Spiritual by John Coltrane

A song which gets you in the mood (for dancing)

Sophie Ellis Bextor or something off a year 6 disco mix circa 2002.

A song which gets you in the mood (for romancing)

Most music I listen to does this.

The soundtrack to your last holiday

I listened to my own album when I was last on holiday.

A song which has changed your mind

I’m On Fire by Bruce Springsteen. It changed my mind about Bruce Springsteen.

A song which makes you cry

Kalimankou Denkou by Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares.

A song which makes you laugh

I’m White & Middle Class by Urinals

A song which gives you goosebumps

Iris by Wim Mertens

A song which makes you feel empowered

Body’s In Trouble by Mary Margaret O’Hara

An artist you regret never having seen live

Broadcast

An artist you hope to see live soon

Stereolab just reformed, so them. They are the next best thing to Broadcast.

A gig you’ll never forget

Suicide at the Barbican, 2015. Several months before Alan Vega died. Like witnessing an opening into the mouth of hell.

An album you know by heart

Rain Dogs by Tom Waits

A cover which is better than the original

At Last I Am Free by Robert Wyatt (Originally by Chic)

A song you first heard on a film soundtrack

A Blossom Fell by Nat King Cole. The most beautiful scene in Badlands, when they dance together in the middle of the desert night, after going on a killing spree. The song is romantic but the lyrics are really about deception, about knowing the end is near.

A song you love in a foreign language

Bülbül by Selda BaÄŸcan

An instrumental song you love

Anything by Delia Derbyshire, a national treasure who never got the credit she deserved.

A song which gets stuck in your head

The chorus for the song Australia by Attic Abasement has been swirling around my brain recently like a sock in a washing machine

A recent musical discovery

Germs by Acetone
