BUGS

The Hook mixtape is compiled through a series of music related questions. Each artist who fills it out can answer as many or as few of the questions as they wish, and elaborate on their choices, or let them speak for themselves.

The last piece of music you paid for (streaming doesn’t count)

Alice: American Waters - Silver Jews. This was a gift for my housemate, but I really love this album too.

Lucy: Reward - Cate Le Bon on vinyl. ‘tis beautiful

Your favourite place to listen to music

Alice: On public transport, walking somewhere or while I’m cleaning/organising something. I am really easily distracted and I usually find it easier to focus on something when I’m doing something else.

Lucy: I've recently taken up jogging and music is the perfect distraction to the torture

A song which reminds you of your childhood

Bridie: Sweet Thing - Chaka Khan

Alice: Living for The City - Stevie Wonder. This song was in some animated children's film about dogs I had on video as a child and I do not know the name of the film and I have since tried to find it but I can’t. But I heard that song and really loved it.

Your go-to karaoke song

Alice: 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton or Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush

Zhane: I Saw A Tiger - Joe Exotic. I aspire to be like him. Ok for real it is American Boy - Estelle feat Kanye West. I am versatile.

Bridie: Anything Abba

Lucy: Daniel Bedingfield - If You're Not The One

A song which could change the world if everyone heard it

Alice: The Book Of Love - The Magnetic Fields

Lucy: Lucy Spraggan - Last night

Alice: Lucy what the hell?

Zhane: Omg Lucy I forgot about her. What a legend.

A song you'd rather never hear again

Zhane: Old Town Road -  Lil Nas X. I do not wish to hear this song ever again.

Alice:  Old Town Road is actually a banger Zhane. I would personally like to never hear any pop song EVER again. I despise pop punk/emo music. I am not sorry.

A song which reminds you of someone you don’t see anymore

Zhane: I Don’t Fuck With You - Big Sean. I mean…. Do I have to explain?

Bridie: Bros - Wolf Alice

Lucy: Go Ask Alice [White Rabbit] - Jefferson Aeroplane. Haven't seen Alice in 6 weeks :'(

A song which gets you in the mood (for dancing)

Alice: Rasputin by Boney M. There is no other song like it. Historical, educational, funky.

Zhane: Dancing In The Moonlight - Toploader. It is literally impossible to not move ya booty when this song plays. Confirmed by science.

Lucy: Disco Tits - Tove Lo

A song which gets you in the mood (for romancing)

Lucy: Our Last Summer - Abba

Alice: Lucy seriously wtf ?

Lucy: It’s so nostalgic

A song which makes you cry

Zhane: Doomed - Moses Sumney. Never heard a voice like his. Instant tears.

Lucy: The Exchange - Torres

A song which makes you laugh

Zhane: Anywhere - Snoop Dogg. Only Snoop can rap about blunts and gators and make it a bop.

A song which tells a story

Zhane: I went to the store one day - Father John Misty. I will dance to this song at my wedding.

A song which makes you feel empowered

Alice: Adventures in Success - Will Powers. This song is a cross between a self help book and an all round 80s banger and I LOVE IT !

An artist you regret never having seen live

Alice: Prince. I love Prince so much and I really regret not seeing him before he died.

Zhane: Amy Winehouse. I grew up listening to her and wanting to be her. She will always be my favourite songwriter of all time.

Lucy: Sharon Van Etten, I've been gagging for years

An artist you hope to see live soon

Zhane: Christine and the Queens. I envy anyone who has seen them live before.

Lucy: Kamikaze Palm Tree

A gig you’ll never forget

Zhane: Childish Gambino. He is not only a musician but a PERFORMER, let me tell you that!

Bridie: Moses Sumney

Lucy: Courtney Barnett 2k14 Manchester Gorilla

Alice: Vulf Peck in 2016. I had such a good time that I fell over and ripped both knees of my jeans. Weyes Blood last year at Brixton Electric was also amazing. I nearly sold my ticket because I was so broke and really needed the money, but I am so glad I didn’t because it was one of the best gigs I have been to and I screamed the words of every song.

An album you know by heart

Zhane: Blonde - Frank Ocean. I am a softboi. Also, Immunity by Clairo. I love pop. Alice, do you hear me? I LOVE POP MUSIC.

Bridie: Aromanticism - Moses Sumney

Lucy: Capacity - Big Thief

Alice: Blonde by Frank Ocean, Another Side of Bob Dylan and The White Album by The Beatles

A song you love in a foreign language

Alice: Je Te Veux - By Erik Satie and Henry Pacory performed by Jessye Norman and Dalton Baldwin. And also La Paix - Amandou & Mariam

Lucy: Calon Peiriant - Gwenno

An instrumental song you love

Zhane: Wish I Was - Kim Deal. This is actually a song we use for reference as BUGS. It’s a great song.

Alice:  It Never Entered My Mind - Miles Davis Quintet

Lucy: Montreal - Kaki King

A song which gets stuck in your head

Alice: Boney Was A Warrior - Paul Clayton. I did a research project in my third year of uni that started off being about sea shanties (the topic changed many times) and I listened to a lot of sea shanties. This shantie and particular version by Paul Clayton  got stuck in my head so much my housemates tried to ban me from singing it and I still get it in my head all the time now a year and a half on.

Lucy: I've had Uptown Girl stuck in my head since I was 15

Zhane: Since 2010, I have been singing “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?” and I cannot stop. If you do not know the song, we can never be friends.

Alice: I can confirm Zhane ends every sentence anyone says that starts ‘Do you ever feel’ with ‘like a plastic bag’ and then the rest of the song follows.

A recent musical discovery

Alice: Yamamoto Kakapoto - Yamasuki Singers, and Mid-Air Thief - These Chains

Zhane: So I Don’t Feel Useless - Dianna Lopez, and All We Do For Love - Benny Sings
